you know you're old when you start a story with,
"when i was a little girl..."
when i was a little girl we used to make these really cool plates in school. the kind where you draw on it with special paint or markers, the school sends it away to be baked, then you get it back and you can use it forever.
these weren't just drawings though, these were stamped with our HANDPRINT!
it was a really special keepsake that i know my mom adored. and it's cool to see it now, reminding yourself what a teeny punk kid you used to be. lol
turn the clock fast forward 40 or so years and here i wish i had the same plates from my kids.
times have changed and so has the school budget where now the only plates they use in art class are paper.
so what's a deprived-child's-handprint-plate-mom to do these days? yes there are kits you can buy to make these plates but i am looking for a
dirt cheap inexpensive alternative.
hence the dollar store to the rescue.
they have solid glass plates for ONE DOLLAH!
this is what you'll need.
oh and an orange sharpie marker for glass that i forgot to take a pic of.
i made a bunch of pics for you, just follow along...
put that paper aside for a second.
now grab that paper again and,
here's a closer look on how your kid can write the
"happy thanksgiving" in reverse.
after we made the first one, my son said he wanted fancier feathers. i think he hangs around me too much. haha
so we did this.
this painted hand made these cool feathers.
oh before i forget to tell you, when the hand is pressed down on the plate, the entire palm does not imprint.
so, you do this:
when they are all dry,
they are all done.
i think my tutorials take longer to write than the actual making of these plates :>P
you could write the date down too but i wanted to keep them just like this. i can always look on this blog to see how old he was when he made these, hoping this blog will live til eternity.
(note to self: your son was 9 when he made these!)
have fun with them!
now 40 years later your kid can look at what a teeny punk kid he was too.
just totally kidding about the punk part!
but he'll get a kick outtta looking how much he's grown.
as always, thanks for reading my blog :)
